Agatha Christie made murder genteel and she still mystifies.
I had already read most of Christie's works years earlier when I began to write the book. From my "sophisticated" 1990s perspective, I wondered if re-reading them would be disillusioning, if they would be too simple, too "cozy." I received a pleasant surprise and felt like I was re-entering her world in which people stab, choke, poison and shoot each other -- yet it is all so civilized. After re-reading her oeuvre, I now believe that she was a very dangerous lady -- to make murder fit so logically into life.
