Originally published in 2004. In recent years, there has been much debate about the economic performance of the Scottish economy in relation to the economy of Britain as a whole. However, with the establishment of the Scottish Parliament, the debate has shifted somewhat to focus on the economic disparities between areas within Scotland. The second section covers a number of cross-cutting issues, such as economic development, education and training, transport and communications and community planning. It concludes with a critical appraisal of the various policies discussed and their implications.
