Why do our best efforts at change always seem to stall? What stops us from moving forward? As individuals and as organizations, we lay the blame on a lack of time, information, *, or motivation. However, our own illusions are usually the true culprit. As this insightful book will quickly convince you, getting real is the only way to get ahead. “We labor under fatal illusions,” says author Jim Lucas, “when we base our behavior on what we wish to be true about our business, or about the marketplace, rather than on what is actually true. We treat our symptoms while core problems fester unchecked. The syndrome is all too common, but there is a remedy. Fatal Illusions shows us how to dig out the truth and * yourself for positive action.” The book analyzes 12 major illusions with significant power to harm you and your organization. The illusions involve too-comfortable beliefs about mission statements, teamwork, incentives, and other big issues that soak up time and resources - and they may startle you by hitting so close to home.

Organizations are reality-impaired, but we can still win
All organizations are, to one degree or another, reality-impaired. They say one thing is important but do something else, say x is important but reward y. And we can fall for the popular lie that perception is reality, but only reality is reality. The degree to which our perceptions, both personal and organizational, align with reality, the more successful we will be.
I wrote this book because of the frustration so many people, both leaders and employees, have with the denial, unreality, and illusions pervading their organizations. This book will let you evaluate how your organization or department is in facing and confronting reality, and will give you some new slants and ideas on how to overcome potentially fatal illusions.
The biggest challenge facing organizations today isn't global competition or the pace of change. It is our own unwillingness to face the truth and then take the necessary (and often uncomfortable or painful) steps in a new and more helpful direction.
I invite you to explore with me this fascinating aspect of being human, and to see how we can lead work and personal lives that are more authentic and more successful at the same time.
