The facets of Frank Sinatra's career are so many and so varied it will take more than several volumes to capture his professional life completely. His personal life is a mailer he may one day share with the world. A volume devoted exclusively to Sinatra recordings is imminent and the man of television and the nightclub circuit deserves recognition. This volume, however, deals only with Sinatra's motion picture career. For it is Sinatra, the actor, who is. in my opinion, always interesting and often versatile. Some of his films are a monumental tribute to him personally because they are so poor, albeit commercial. One may well wonder why he consented to appear in them. And yet the roles with which he has been most successful, Maggio in From Here to Eternity, and Frankie Machine in The Man With the Golden Arm, are not like the real Sinatra at all. They are genuine characterizations of which any artist can be proud. His musical contributions to films have all been delivered with the same charm and ease Bing Crosby displays and even if he can't dance as well as Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly he can still be a top chorus boy. A proud, complex, diverse and passionate man, Frank Sinatra is also something else; something wrongly attributed to other show personalities: total talent. GENE RINGGOLD. Book.
