Synopsis

The second edition of this volume shows English language teachers how to enlarge their curriculum beyond the traditional emphases on grammar and syntax. Written from a "language in cultural and social context" perspective, it clearly demonstrates to language teachers how they can incorporate a variety of language topics - general semantics, regional and social dialects, syntax, spelling, history of the English language, social language conventions, lexicography and word origins - into their classrooms. Clearly written and reader-accessible, the book reviews basic aspects of a more comprehensive approach to English language study in classrooms, and then demonstrates how teachers can create student-centred, inquiry-oriented activities for the learners in their classes.

In addition this text: illustrates how teachers can help their students learn about many aspects of the English language, not just traditional grammar; emphasizes how language is a distinctly human activity and how successful language use is dependent upon appropriate choices driven by social context; includes exemplary student-centred activities teachers can use as models in their classrooms; and contains two chapters - one on the languages of intolerance and discrimination, and another on how teachers can help the ESL learner in the mainstream classroom.
