Synopsis

The goal of this book -- a theoretically based, well-organized, useful guide for teaching -- is to help the beginning teacher create a classroom environment that integrates literacy development with learning in all areas of the curriculum. The major components of an integrated language program are identified, and the skills teachers need to implement this kind of program in their own classrooms are described. Designed to be kept and used as a resource in the classroom, this text provides fundamental information about language arts teaching. A constructivist orientation, an emphasis on teachers as reflective decision makers, and vivid portrayals of the classroom as a community of learners and inquirers are woven throughout the book.

Key features include:
* a wealth of models, suggestions, and step-by-step guidelines for introducing integrated teaching and learning practices into elementary classrooms at the kindergarten, primary, and intermediate levels;
* a focus on relevant research in language arts and professional teacher development;
* true-to-life classroom narratives that model instructional strategies and demonstrate interactions between real teachers and students; and
* an innovative chapter format that makes the text accessible as a resource for student, beginning, and experienced teachers.

From the Author

A reader-friendly text and handbook for teaching.
This book is designed to be used as an undergraduate text in elementary language arts methods courses and as a resource handbook for teaching. It provides professional support for the novice teacher or for experienced teachers who want to introduce integrated language arts practices into their classrooms. The first eleven chapters describe an individual practice in detail and locate it within an integrated instructional setting. Section titles in each chapter are the same, which permits quick reference use. Each chapter describes a practice, offers a theoretical rationale for its use, and provides a narrative description of the practice in kindergarten, primary and intermediate classrooms. Additional sections give step-by-step suggestions for preparation and presentation, ideas for including all members of the class (addressing disabilities and differences), annotated lists of children's books that help create understanding, ways to address obstacles to instruction, methods of evaluation, ideas for creating instructional partners in the school, home and community, an extended discussion of related topics in philosophy or psychology of education, reviews of professional journals, annotated resources for teaching, reflections from teachers' journals, reader response questions and suggestions for trying out the ideas presented in the chapter. Chapter topics include: Integrating Language Learning in the Elementary Classroom, Reading Aloud, Independent Reading, Creating a Literature Base, Shared and Guided Reading, Listening and Speaking, Writing to Learn, Mini-Lessons, Using Media and Technology to Support Language Learning, and Exploring the Curriculum with Language, Literature and Themes. A concluding chapter describes an instructional day in a kindergarten, a third grade and a fifth grade classroom. Teachers whose classrooms were observed describe their instruction in their own words, telling how they plan and evaluate their teaching on a daily, weekly and yearly basis. Classrooms described in this chapter and throughout the text represent all socio-economic levels and both rural and urban schools.
