Synopsis

The following pages were taken down in longhand by two secretaries during the two courses I gave in London on some ideas of Plato in Michaelmas term 1905, and in Lent term 1906. I do not prepare my lectures either by writing them out, or by preparing elaborate or even short notes for them; I prepare them only by constantly thinking of their subjects. The consequence is that I am unable to reproduce any lecture as I have actually given it. In correcting the work of my secretaries, I find, as my readers will not fail to see, that -| while much of the substance of the lectures is jgiven, many another point, connecting-link, and 2shade has disappeared. For this, the indulgence of the reader is requested. But for my hearers, vwho constantly asked for these pages, and were i kind enough to promise to put up with their necessary incompleteness, the present book would not have been published at all.
