Synopsis
This volume explores in excerpts of criticism the works of the most important writers in the Arabic-speaking world in the twentieth century. It marks the first time that the writing of these poets, novelists, and playwrights can be approached through the opinions of both Arab and Western critics. Starting with the so-called pre-Romantics in the early decades of the last century, the book traces the development of poetry, fiction, and drama up to the 1980s. While the bulk of the authors included have lived in the Middle East, there is also coverage of major figures from North Africa. Seventy-one representatives of Algerian, Egyptian, Iraqi, Lebanese, Palestinian, Sudanese, Syrian, and Tunisian literatures are covered. While the burgeoning criticism in English - by Arabs and non-Arabs alike - is well represented, the majority of selections have been translated from the Arabic by the editor expressly for this volume. The book thus is not only a source of information on modern Arabic literature in all its genres and in the different countries of the Arab world, but also provides a clear picture of the various trends and developments in modern literary criticism in the region. The volume is enhanced by an extensive introduction by the editor. A Works Mentioned section provides information on publication dates and available English translations. This entire work has been compiled to be of maximum use to all those with an interest in the literary history and criticism of this little-known modern literary tradition. Roger Allen is an Emeritus Professor of Arabic and Comparative Literature at the University of Pennsylvania, was born in England and is a graduate of Oxford University.
