Synopsis
Two discrete areas make up the discipline of occupational medicine. The first is the area of prevention and management of illness caused by workplace exposures. The second, covered in this book, is the prevention and management of injury and disability caused by traumatic worksite events. The text provides a clinical overview of occupational injury. Divided into five sections, it includes: coverage of administrative aspects, such as worker's compensation and managed care, legal issues and information management; a system-by-system approach to occupational injuries, including hand and wrist, lower back and respiratory system; a section on "special issues" such as cumulative trauma disorders, pain management, building-related illness and psychiatric issues; advice on prevention and control including ergonomics, drug testing and protective equipment; and appendices filled with addresses, phone numbers and resource material from OSHA, NIOSH and various state worker's institutes and agencies.
