From the Inside Flap

Technology has become a requisite part of the high school curriculum, but educators and parents are still trying to figure out how to use it. This book points the way.

When technology becomes an integral part of an exciting classroom curriculum, student engagement, and the potential for learning rise dramatically. The Connected School takes an intimate and in-depth look at six high schools that have pioneered the use of technology within urban school districts. Written by Barbara Means, Williamll Penuel, and Christine Padilla-from the prestigious Center for Technology in Learning at SRI International-the book introduces the concept of "student-empowering technology use" (creative, student-driven learning activities that best harness the power of technology. It shows how a "connected" school can teach students to think and create with technology, allow them to gather and analyze information, produce on-line reports and multimedia presentations, manipulate computer models and simulations, and interact with distant scientists as they participate in real scientific expeditions and explorations. In addition, The Connected School is filled with solid recommendations for teachers, school leaders, and district administrators that show how to seamlessly implement technology within the classroom and use technology in a way that truly empowers students to excel.

Throughout the book, the cases of real schools, classrooms, teachers, and kids shed light on what works and what doesn't and what it will take to deploy technology's potential in schools across the nation.
