Synopsis

This beautifully illustrated volume, substantially updated for this new large-format edition in 2020, is the ultimate reference guide to more than 1300 of the most spectacular, best-loved and unusual trees across the globe. Turning the 500-plus pages of this book reveals the incredible diversity of trees, from the huge redwoods of California to the banyan trees of south-east Asia. Here are elephant apple and sandpiper trees; a tree called 'drenched in salt spray' in Maori; cricket bat and corkscrew willows, as well as weeping; strawberry, strawberry guava, and snowbell trees; ice cream bean, and shaving brush trees... powderpuff, ear pod and monkeypod trees... as well as myriad oaks, chestnuts, laurels, pines and myrtles. A comprehensive introduction looks at the natural history of trees, how they have evolved over time, and the ways in which they have adapted to suit the variety of terrains in which they thrive. There is a guide to what tree grows best where, if your garden is cold or wet, or dry and shady, large or small; whether your soil is acid or alkaline; and what offers glorious leaf, bark, flower or fruit colour through the seasons, perhaps snowy mespilus in spring, honey locust in summer, katsura in autumn, and corkscrew hazel in winter. The main part of the book features three geographical directories of trees from Temperate and Tropical America; Britain and Europe; and Africa, Asia and Australasia. Each tree entry is accompanied by a hand-painted botanical illustration, and includes identification details such as bark texture; leaf shape and size; flowering time; average height; and overall tree shape. An essential volume for everyone's natural history and gardening library.
