NEW REVISED EDITION. This book, in a new large format, is an invaluable guide to every aspect of horsemanship, with a fully illustrated directory of breeds of the world, step-by-step instructions on how to ride, and information about specialist equipment for both horse and rider. Over 60 breeds of horse and pony are covered, from the more familiar Thoroughbred and Shetland pony to the less well known Nonius and Caspian. Riding instructions cover tacking up for the first time to mastering the intricacies of dressage. The book also includes a directory of equipment, including the saddle, bridle and bit, training aids, horse clothing and protective equipment, and the rider's clothing. Expertly written, this indispensable large-format new volume, comprehensively updated in 2018, is organised in five sections covering all aspects of horses, riding and horse care. Breeds of the World: This is an illustrated manual of over 80 types of horse and pony. Each animal is described in detail, including height and the key characteristics for each breed. Horse and Pony Care: All aspects of stable management and general care are covered, from bedding, feeding and watering to exercise and grooming, including plaiting, clipping and shoeing. There is also a section on health and basic first aid, to ensure that your horse is kept fit and in prime condition. Learning to Ride: This section begins with the novice meeting a horse and tacking up for the first time, and ends with the competent rider mastering the intricacies of dressage and tackling fences. Step-by-step photographs and straightforward text show you how to get the most out of your horse. World of the Horse: Find out about all of the horse-related sports and competitions, such as dressage, polo and horseball, racing and cross-country riding, hunting and show jumping. Saddlery and Equipment: A guide to the vast array of equipment available, each piece of tack is discussed item by item: the saddle, the bridle and the bit, training aids and gadgets, horse clothing and protective equipment, and the rider s clothing.
