This book offers expert advice on basic dog training methods, from the moment your puppy first comes home to the age when he shows his most challenging behaviour, and beyond. It includes all puppies' first lessons, such as house-training, handling and grooming, socialization and habituation, confidence building and learning to play tug-of-war. It offers practical solutions for household problems such as attention-seeking behaviour, chewing clothes, jumping up, barking and begging. Living with a dog is an important responsibility that should never be taken lightly, and this book begins with a guide to responsible dog ownership. In this book, new owners are guided through the process of welcoming a new puppy into their home and beginning his training and socialization. Step-by-step instructions explain basic techniques and go on to cover all the most important commands. The book also covers the most common behavioural problems that can occur, along with solutions for overcoming these. Focusing on making training easy and fun, this book will get puppies 'bomb-proof', as well as helping owners understand the basics of dog behaviour and why dogs do the things they do. It is a fun, accessible guide that responsible owners cannot afford to be without.

Patsy Parry has been training puppies and their owners since the early 1990s. She holds a Diploma in Companion Animal Behaviour and Training, and heads the education committee for the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Patsy started Able Trainers in 1996 because of the lack of reward-based training clubs in her area. Hundreds of dogs have since passed through her doors, learning fun, reward-based training methods, and becoming confident, easy to live with and a pleasure to own. She has written a book entitled Puppies' Problems (Exposure Publishing), chapters in Teach Yourself Dog Training (Hodder Headline) and The Active Dog (Pet Book Publishers), as well as many articles for dog training magazines.
