Synopsis

Using examples from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, this study considers the position of what scholarship (often with a Europocentric bias) has considered a "village" within the rapid changes taking place in rural Southeast Asia. More specifically, the essays centre around the village as a creation of the (neo)colonial state, as de-construction within the capitalist state, as well as the focus of present-day government policies. The work is directed at established scholars and students of Southeast Asia by raising fundamental research issues in connection with the creation/modification of the village as a basic unit within Southeast Asian development strategies. The contributions of an international group of scholars include both a rethinking of known data and the village as a unit of development and administration.
