Synopsis
Written in guide book form but necessarily limited by the vastness and diversity of the country, this work is divided culturally rather than geographically over two volumes. The first covers Hindu, Jain and Buddhist monuments, the second on the legacy of Moslem and European domination. The first part of the book consists of background information, the land and its people, its historical perspective, social structure, priests and pilgrims and the theory of the temple to enable the visitor to place the sites and monuments in their historical, cultural and religious context. The second part is a gazetteer of principal sites, monuments and related museums arranged into six regions.
