Between 1909 and 1929 the spectacular productions of Serge Diaghilev's "Ballets Russes" transformed the presentation of dance. Diaghilev brought leading modern artists, composers and choreographers together to collaborate on new ballets: the result was an integration of art, dance and music that was unique in its time and still remains influential. This volume is an illustrated look at the "Ballets Russes" and their exotic costumes, created by Diaghilev's friends Leon Bakst, Alexandre Benois, and Nicholas Roerich, and such artists as Sonia Delaunay, Giorgio de Chirico, Natalia Goncharova, Michel Larionov, Henri Matisse and Andre Masson. The costumes, from famous productions like "L'Apres midi d'un faune", "Scheherazade" and "L'Oiseau de feu", have been put on display in art museums all over the world, including the St Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music, London's Victoria and Albert Museum and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.

Roger Leong (editor) Format: Softback Number of Pages: 96 The performances of the Ballets Russes of Serge Diaghilev were by all accounts magnificent. From Russia with Love: Costumes for the Ballets Russes 1909-1933 traces the story of the Ballets Russes through the work of the company's designers, among whom were some of the foremost artists of the day -- costumes, original drawings, and sets which evoke the magical sights, sounds, and sense of a Ballets Russes performance. Essays discuss the phenomenon of the Ballets Russes from its origins in St. Petersburg at the beginning of the century to its legacy as far away as Australia, decades later. Secondhand, Hardback.
