Review

"I personally think this is an excellent publication encouraging us to look at professional development, dispelling fears and effectively guiding the reader through the process...I would give it 9 out of 10."
Glenn Richards, GP Trainers Course Book Reviews

"I like this book because it offers a simple solution to a future problem. I like it because it does not involve Balint, Pendleton or Neighbour. It has no mention of consultation analysis, the hidden agenda, the patient′s ideas, concerns or expectations. I commend this book to you all."
Michael Wright, GP Trainers Course Book Reviews

"I was struck by the relevance of this book at this time of rapid change in primary care. ′It looks as though someone′s done all the donkey work for us,′ said our practice manager."
Henry Tegner, Doctor magazine in May 2002

"Primary health care teams can use this workbook as a ′hands–on′ practical guide to meeting the requirements of continuing professional development, clinical governance and professional revalidation. This will provide a model to replace PGEA and fit in with the development of primary–care groups and the introduction of clinical governance. It is not an exhaustive list of what can be done, but it is a framework into which you can dovetail your own ideas."
Dr Robin While and Margareth Attwood, the editors (extract from the Preface)

"It is important that our learning is implemented and integrated into our clinical care... This excellent publication gives practical advice on how these processed can occur. It contains all the tools we need to move into continuing professional development of individuals and practice teams. It is lucid and practical; informative and developmental. In these pages you will find a blueprint for your practice professional development plan and you personal development plan. It is a route map for CPD and life–long learning. You can′t go wrong!"
Professor Mike Pringle, Chairman of Council, Royal College of General Practitioners, Professor of General Practice, Nottingham University (extract from the Foreword)

From the Back Cover

The introduction of primary care groups and clinical governance are just some of the changes occurring in general practice today. These changes offer new opportunities, not least in the way that GPs keep their clinical skills up–to–date. Originally published as ′The Wessex Way, this workbook will help GPs to meet the requirements of continuing professional development (CPD).

The emphasis of CPD is as much on the development of the practice as it is about the individual GP. After an introductory section about getting started in Part 1, teh book is then divided into two main sections. Part 2 focuses on the formulation of a practice professional development plan (PPDP) which represents the future goals of the practice based on health needs assessment of the practice population and an analysis of the skill mix of the team. Par 3 concentrates on the professional development plan (PDP) for the individual GP. This will partly be guided by the PPDP but will also take into account personal aspirations of the GP, his or her learning style and educational needs.

This workbook takes the mystery out of professional development by explaining how to use existing information to analyse strengths and weaknesses, priorities and needs, and develop a plan that will improve working life on all levels.

In this time of change all GPs will find this user–friendly guide an essential part of their life–long learning.
