Arem's CONQUERING MATH ANXIETY is a comprehensive workbook that provides a variety of exercises and worksheets along with detailed explanations of methods to help "math-anxious" students deal with and overcome math fears. "Three features that I especially like are: 1) the exercises that help students identify learning styles, 2) the suggestions for improving classroom performance, and 3) the study checklist to be used before taking a test. Overall, I like the positive approach the book takes." "I like the exercises. I feel that they lead the students to discover their deep-seated thoughts and anxieties and can be very beneficial for recovering from math anxiety. The case studies model different situations and the exercises serve as a sort of path for students to follow in order to discover their own situations and solutions to their anxieties. Overall, I like everything about the book. Students are constantly reminded that they have worth and that they can do math."
About the Author
Cynthia A. Arem is Chair of the Social Sciences department at Pima Community College. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Arizona, and was Math and Sciences Counselor at Pima Community College from 1982 to 1998. She is President of National League of American Pen Women, Tucson Branch.
