From the Author

Appreciating your children for who they really are.
If my last book, ZEN AND THE ART OF FATHERHOOD, told "witty and and enlightening stories" (Publishers Weekly) about raising seven children in order to convey the comforting message that "everything is necessary," then THE ABCs OF REAL FAMILY VALUES reflects on the ways that parents might reasonably cope with the everything that kids pile on their shoulders. Although the chapters are structured on specific values--from Affection to Zeal--gleaned through a life informed by children (and not politicians), the essence of the book is on the core value of appreciating one's kids for who they are, not who they should be. In truly liking our children, we encourage them to grow into independent, moral adults.
