From the Author

Thank you, Mr. McCourt, et al.
It was a lot of fun putting together our Irish American history, and Mike and I are more than pleased that some of our earliest readers have enjoyed our modest efforts. Frank McCourt said that "reading 'May the Road Rise to Meet You' is like sitting by the fire with a lively and scholarly seanachie. There are other introductions to the story of the Irish in America but this, I think, is the best--light, bright, detailed, refreshing. It's as satisfying as a pint of Guinness of a Connemara sunset." Terry Golway, who wrote the terrific Devoy biography "Irish Rebel" and the handsome coffee-table volume "The Irish in America" was equally kind: "This is a wonderful, lively journey through Irish American history. If you have questions, this book has the answers." Such reaction hasn't been restricted to members of the tribe, we're happy to say. The New York Times columnist Robert Lipsyte, who's Irish only on March 17th, said of our book, "You don't have to be Irish to savor this smart, tasty Irish stew of stories, facts and chuckles." To them--and to you--we raise a glass and offer, "slainte!"
