About the Author

Pinckney Benedict was born in 1964. He grew up and continues to live on his family's dairy farm, not far north of Lewisburg, West Virginia. He holds a bachelor's degree from Princeton University, where he studied creative writing with Joyce Carol Oates, and a master's degree from the creative writing program of the University of Iowa. His first collection of short stories, Town Smokes, was published in 1987 to wide acclaim; included in that collection was "The Sutton Pie Safe," for which Mr. Benedict received the Nelson Algren Award, given by the Chicago Tribune. He has also received a James Michener Fellowship from the Writers' Workshop.
