Shortly after the decease of william johnson Fox, which took place on Friday, June 3, 1864, a Committee was assembled to consider the best form of a Memorial of his invaluable services to social and political progress, and especially to that freedom Of inquiry in religion which he ever regarded as a duty inseparable from the right of private judgment.

The Committee unanimously resolved to publish a Memorial Edition of Mr. Fox's Works, exhibiting the various phases of his mind in reference to theology, politics, education, literature, and criticism.
