Synopsis

Dealing with theological affirmations and philosophical reactions to them, this concise book presents insightful applications of modern general philosophy to religion. Originally published in 1969, the book investigates epistemological thinking first before turning to notions of assertion, belief, proposition and contradiction – the logic of theology. It concerns itself with doctrine and morality, considering the writings of contemporary thinkers on these themes.

Review

Reviews of the original edition:

‘My Bambrough’s book on metaphysics...treats some fundamental topics with illuminating clarity and unobtrusive humour...He approaches the subject not as a theologian but as a lay philosopher and student of the classics. These overlapping fields of interest make themselves felt in fruitful combination throughout the book...His consistent lucidity will widely commend his critical account of various ways in which modern British philosophy has concerned itself with the theological questions.’ Church Times

‘The book is perceptive, pleasant to read, and full of insights and stimuli.’ Philosophical Review
