In its description and analysis of the current context of research and practice of HRD in small organizations, this collection of essays provides a comprehensive and critical evaluation of current approaches. This evaluation leads to an exploration of a number and range of HRD methods as they are applied in the small organization context and provides a range of examples of research and practice which will inform and support the teaching of HRD.

'Professors Jim Stewart and Graham Beaver, both of whom are well known and highly respected academic researchers in this field, have succeeded in putting together an empirically rigorous, coherent and informative volume of well-written chapters on a relatively underdeveloped but very important research topic.' - Harry Matlay, UCE Birmingham, The Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development
'This is an excellent book and I would unreservedly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in training and HRD in SMEs. It is a well designed and researched volume with good quantitative and qualitative studies that would satisfy even the most discerning and knowledgeable reader. Academics, researchers, students and owner/managers as well as trainers, small business advisers and policy makers - could all benefit from this specialised book.' - Harry Matlay, UCE Birmingham, The Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development
Small organisations are of growing influence as a source of employment opportunities, but HRD in small organisations is a neglected field of study. This book provides a comprehensive and contemporary review of research into the practice of HRD in small organisations. The book is divided into three sections. The focus of part one is on the context of HRD research in small organisations, the contextual characteristics of small organisations and the implications of these for the design and conduct of research into HRD practices. Chapters in part two report the results of research that informs understanding of approaches to HRD, including recent approaches such as those based on developments in information and communications technology. The third and final part is concerned with HRD methods as they are applied and practised and looks at constructs such as mentoring and coaching. All of the chapters are based on current or recent research. However, there is diversity in the methodological assumptions informing the design of that research. The contributions therefore reflect the eclectic nature of HRD research and writing.
HRD in Small Organisations will be of essential interest to students, academics and policy advisors within the fields of HRD and HRM."About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.
