When this work appeared in 1914 it evoked a heated discussion. Geoffrey Scott offers an analysis of the theories behind 19th- and 20th-century architecture. He discusses the classical tradition as reflected in the architecture of Renaissance and Baroque Italy and the role given the human body in that tradition. The book was written while Scott was living in Italy where he absorbed the classical tradition, which he saw as the main stream of Western art, and became aware that the stream had been clouded by man whose ideas were derived from sources outside art. These ideas, from which the dominant concepts of contemporary art are derived, Scott put into perspective by calling "fallacies". Thus he throws into question the ideas which we accept without reflection.
