This is the story of Billy White Hawks' struggles to find his way toward manhood by leaving the Beneway reservation in Idaho and moving to the city to live with his older half-sister, Alice Fay. First published in 1977, 'The Owls Song' remains a ground-breaking work and a milestone of contemporary fiction.

"Authentic in language and realistic in treatment of its theme, this is a stark social commentary on racial and youthful alienation."
This book was first marketed as a "young adults" work
I wrote this book when I was 21, when I was staying home with my newborn between my sophomore and junior years of college. It was never intended as a "young adults" book..it does contain a very graphic suicide by self-inflicted gunshot wound, for instance and, I recall, one of the early reviews said, "It will take quite an exceptional "young adult" to sit still for all this introspection".
But it is no longer a "young adult" book and is now in its 25th year in print. The most commercially successful of all my five books.
