This is part of a course of language and literature study at Key Stage 4. The course covers language work and literary and non-literary texts including contemporary and pre-20th century poetry, literature, drama and media. In addition to a course book, there are seven self-contained literature study books, each leading the student through the close study of a major or set text, or prescribed period of poetry within its historical, social and cultural context. This volume explores the text of "Great Expectations" and offers ideas and material to support the GCSE student's reading of the text. It begins by looking at short sections of the text to establish the main plot lines and the characters. It then presents a series of activities which aim to develop investigative approaches and an understanding of key themes and Dickens' narrative style. There are also opportunities for students to research the historical, social and cultural background of the novel, and draw some parallels with contemporary experience and values. Written and oral tasks help generate course work and give opportunities for oral assessment.
