From the Author

Going beyond the conventional wisdom on Vietnam
Shadows and Wind was written after spending three years living in Vietnam, working as a journalist. My aim was to give a broad look at a society today and to go beyond the images left by the Vietnam War, images that are some of the most powerful of this century. Covering issues including politics, popular culture, food, architecture, literature, religion, and the overseas Vietnamese. Shadows and Wind is based on hundreds of interviews with Vietnamese and years of research in Vietnam and abroad. I examine the impact of the war and provide historical background to explain how Vietnam got to where it is today but the focus is on the contemporary strains in a society that has seen a decade of rapid change..
