Ask someone to give you the name of a scented plant and nine times out of 10 they will say--the rose. David Squire introduces you to many, many more. His book is packed with hundreds of different flowers, trees, shrubs and herbs that will enable you to produce a perfumed garden all year round. It makes inspiring reading on a damp and depressing day when actual gardening is not practical. Divided into three sections, it is worth going through the planning and creating parts before rushing on to the comprehensive list of fragrant plants. These first two sections are full of information and clear illustrations for the inexperienced gardener and yet still have enough practical tips and useful reminders to attract the expert.
The Plant Directory is a well-illustrated section with photographs and brief descriptions of dozens of scented plants, trees and shrubs. Especially useful to the new gardener are the symbols beside each description, which explain if the plant is easy or difficult to grow, the rate it grows, height and spread, whether it likes sun or shade and its main features.
Author David Squire studied at the Hertfordshire College of Horticulture and at Wisley, where he gained the Wisley diploma in horticulture. He has written more than 60 gardening books and received the Garden Writers' of America Quill and Trowel Award.
