Malgré cette notoriété éclatante, les prophètes sont mal connus. On confond leur doctrine avec celle des apôtres et des théologiens. On les voit, n0n tels qu'ils ont été, mais tels que la tradition les représente. Il est un point surtout, le centre et le noeud de leur enseigne ment,que d'épaiss'es ténèbres recouvrent: ce sont leurs idées sur l'âge messianique, sur le Messie et sur son oeuvre. Non pas qu'ils n'aient clairementet assez lori guement développé leur pensée à cet égard; mais on n'a pas cherché à la connaître. On s'est contenté d'ex traire de leurs écrits des oraclès détachés, des mots, des versets, pour en composer une description pr0phé tique, une préfigurahon des événements de la vie de Jésus - Christ et de l'histoire de son Église. On s'est jeté en pleine allégorie; on a vu partout des types; on a dé tourné de leur sens les expreseons les plus simples pour y lire des prédictions biographiques ou les dogmes de l'église. Ce procédé était certainement conforme aux habitudes d'esprit qui ont régné pendant tant de siècles; mais Il ne pouvait être qu'une source d'erreur et d'obscurité. Aujourd'hui qu'on a plus de souci de la vérité historique, d'autres méthodes doivent prévaloir.
