From the Author

I have been using Painter (and Photoshop) for many years and have demonstrated the program at photographic societies throughout the UK. The demonstrations have created a lot of interest in this brilliant program and one of the most frequently asked questions has been ‘Is there a good book on Painter for photographers?’ Unfortunately I have been unable to recommend a book as there are very few on Painter and those that are available, cover the program primarily from a painters perspective and give limited help to those who wish to use it with photographs.
Usually the next comment is that I should therefore write one!
So I have, and here it is.

As the title implies the book is oriented towards the use of photographs artistically enhanced in the Painter program and consists of step by step examples of the many techniques available. It is designed for the total beginner to Painter and assumes no prior knowledge. If you have used other graphics programs such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro then you will have an advantage, however this is not essential.

The book begins with some really simple cloning examples; cloning is the name for the process in which the original photograph is transformed into an artistic interpretation by using some of the huge range of brushes and textures. There are nearly 50 step by step examples, most of which have the original photograph on the accompanying CD so you will be able to try out the technique on my photograph following the instructions and then apply it to your own pictures.

In addition to the step by step examples there are several reference sections to give you a deeper understanding of important elements. One of the difficulties which any inexperienced user of Painter encounters is which brush to use, there are around 600 variations to choose from and most will need their default settings changed to allow them to be used for cloning. Chapter 5 devotes two pages to each of the 33 different brush categories explaining how they can be used, examples of what the brush looks like and a completed picture. There is also a final chapter illustrating all of the default range of paper textures. This helps considerably in selecting which paper surface to use.

The book is packed with colour photographs to illustrate the techniques and inspire new ideas on how to make painterly pictures.
