Long before dinosaurs roamed the earth, prehistoric seas were populated by trilobites, whose fossils are favourites among collectors today. From the giant trilobites of Newfoundland to fascinating new specimens from Morocco, this book brings these "butterflies of the sea" to life for readers who are curious about our remote past This second edition features coverage of a greater variety of trilobites, an improved photographic atlas reorganized to present their evolutionary progression, and over 200 photographs.

"The collective force of these photographs just can't be put into words."--David Quammen "Outside " "Irresistible. [Levi-Setti] has given his collecting self a most precious gift. . . . A reader shares that gift, and many another, like the transient match between the giant trilobites of Newfoundland and those of the Anti-Atlas Mountains overseas, a pulse of evolutionary change while continents recede."--Philip Morrison "Scientific American " "Now at last we have a book that reveals in exquisite detail and admirable depth the nature of the most fascinating of ancient life: the trilobites. . . . This extraordinary group of primitive arthropods deserves wider appreciation, and I can think of no better way to find out more about them than to purchase of copy of this book, open it up, and just drink in page after page of pure trilobites."--Natural History
Riccardo Levi-Setti, (1927-2018) was professor emeritus of physics at the University of Chicago and past director of the Enrico Fermi Institute. Levi-Setti saw his first trilobite fossil on a dig west of Chicago shortly after joining the university as a research associate in 1956. Trilobites would become his passion. Over the rest of his life he traveled around the world to dig, discovering two new species--one in Canada and one in Morocco. Many of his vast collection of trilobites has been donated to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago; others to the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Center in Newfoundland; and a portion to the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He was a fellow of the American Physical Society. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Leonardo da Vinci Award for Outstanding Achievement in Science, the Steinberg Award of the Association of Applied Paleontological Sciences, and the Commendatore dell'Ordine al Merito--one of the highest awards of merit given by the Italian Republic. In addition to three books on trilobites, he also published two physics textbooks, Elementary Particles and Strongly Interacting Particles.
