Synopsis

The complement system is a collection of plasma enzymes that interact in a complex way as a reaction to cell injury, and is central to the immune response. The enzymes that make up the system and their interactions are very widely studied. This text contains detailed step-by-step protocols for analysis of the complement system, and is aimed at new and experienced workers in complement research, as well as clinicians with an interest in immunological diseases. The areas covered include functional and immunochemical methods for the quantitation of complement components, inhibitors, receptors, inflammatory effects of anaphylatoxin release, methods for the analysis of complement biosynthesis and for the study of the system in non-humans. Of particular interest to clinicians are chapters on complement and immune complexes, C2 Inh deficiency, and the genetic analysis of this highly polymorphic system. This book is intended for post-graduate and post-doctoral researchers, academic staff, and clinicians in the fields of biochemical immunology and immunological disease.

Review

"To those who are not actively engaged in the study of its biology and function, the complement system has remained one of the most formidable and dreaded subjects to deal with. . . . This manual . . . is therefore a very timely compilation of all the important protocols of assays that deal with the
complement system. The book's twelve chapters are written by the most respected authorities in the field, and each chapter will serve the interests of researchers and clinicians. In addition, the book contains a useful list of suppliers and their addresses. . . . This compendium of different
protocols for the isolation, purification and the study of complement structure and function will be a much needed manual, and an easy-to-read companion for both beginners and seasoned veterans. With such a wealth of information, this book provides an easily accessible reference source for
clinicians, immunologists and students."--The Quarterly Review of Biology
