Synopsis

Spanning French art from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, the collection of French drawings in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford is one of the lesser known aspects of its distinguished Print Room. Based on the drawings bequeathed to the University of Oxford by the antiquarian Francis Douce in 1834, the collection of French drawings has expanded through gifts and purchases to include work by most of the more familiar draughtsmen of France during the period as well as many minor rarities. This is the seventh volume in the series of catalogues of the drawings in the Ashmolean's Print Room, and it includes all drawings by French artists in the collection apart from the ornament drawings of the sixteenth century and the drawings by Camille Pissarro and his family, which have mostly been published in previous catalogues.
