This volume collects together 15 studies of Virgil by leading authorities in the field, published between 1972 and 1986 in the journal "Greece and Rome". Virgil (70-19 BC) remains the most important of the Roman poets and his poems the "Eclogues", "Georgics" and Aeneid" continue to command a wide critical interest. All three are discussed here, the emphasis being mainly literary, although historical context is not ignored. Students of Virgil, whether in Latin or in translation, will find that the interests of recent scholarship are all fully represented in articles which concentrate on topics such as symbolism in Virgil, the gods in the "Aeneid", agriculture and the "Georgics", the fall of Troy, Dido's "Hamartia" and the translation of Virgil.
