A Krio-English Dictionary - Hardcover

9780198644095: A Krio-English Dictionary

Synopsis

This dictionary, the work of 14 linguistically oriented native speakers, gives the tones, derivations, word classes, meanings and, where appropriate, contemporary and historical usages, of over 30,000 Krio words; together with a linguistic description, the result of original research by one of the authors, of the phonology and the word class system of the language. It is thus the most comprehensive and thorough-going record available of any pidgin or creole, and among the most complete of any African language. Because of the scope of its documentation, and because contrary to customary practice it treats this creole not as an English dialect but as a bona fide language, it is valuable not merely for Sierra Leone where Krio is the lingua franca, but also for the study of English usage in second-language environments throughout the world; for West African linguistics; for the West Indian and American (especially black American) English with which Krio has strong linguistic and historical affinities; and for the worldwide study of pidgins and creoles; and through this last for examining current linguistic practice.
