The prospect of producing clean, sustainable power in substantial quantities from renewable energy sources is arousing interest world-wide. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the principal renewable energy sources; solar thermal, biomass, tidal, wave, photovoltaic, hydro, wind, geothermal. With the aid of 370 detailed illustrations and 50 tables of data, it explains the physical and technological principles underlying each source and examines its environmental impact and future prospects.

This textbook continues the high standards of previous editions in terms of the clarity with which it explains the technologies while offering high quality graphics. Both the range and quality of photos, tables and figures is improved. The expanded section on the key issues relating to the adoption and integration of different renewable energy technologies at greater volumes is a welcome expansion for the undergraduate or other reader who should know something about the technology's interaction with society and not just the technology. I have compared the new edition with other recent textbooks at the same level and will be continuing to recommend this one to undergraduate students. (Peter Connor, Senior Lecturer in Renewable Energy Policy, University of Exeter)
