In this text, the author is concerned with the underlying ideas of statistical methods, with how to choose the right method for the right question, and with how to avoid common pitfalls. It aims to answer many questions which biologists ask, but which are rarely mentioned in any textbook. It also briefly discusses some aspects of biology, for example quantitative genetics and population ecology, which rely heavily on mathematics. The book is intended as supplementary reading for biologists who already know the elements of statistics, and was originally written to answer questions which research biologists often ask.
