The main aim of this book is to describe the basic concepts of the stored-program digital computer and to provide an insight into Boolean algebra, logic circuits, binary arithmetic, computer arcitecture, memory technology, assembly language programming and input/output devices. This upgrded edition contains additional problems and worked examples and ther has been an effort to elucidate certain ambiguities and obscurities that appeared in the original edition. New sections have been added to deal with the most recent technology, such as the use of optical disks in memory technology. A further modification has been the use of the 68000 as the basic model for conveying the basic principles.

The fourth edition of this classic textbook continues to encompass the range of topics that comprise a typical introductory university level course in computer hardware. As with the previous edition the author writes with great clarity, and conveys both his expertise and enthusiasm for the subject. About the Author:
Alan Clements is Motorola Professor in the School of Computing at the University of Teesside, Middlesbrough. In 2002 he was awarded both a National Teaching Fellowship for his contribution to teaching and the IEEE Computer Society's 'Computer Science and Engineering Undergraduate Teaching Award'.
