424 Seiten, 24 cm, gebundene Ausgabe, gebundene Ausgabe, gut This book gives users of numerical methods in ndustry, research establishments, and educat on a practical and theoretical account of the state of art. Emphasis is placed on the description of viable numerical methods, and background theory Is discussed in justifying their use. Based on a Manchester-Liverpool Summer School held in July 1978, it includes contributions from C T H Baker, L M Delves, T L Freeman, L Fox, I Gladwell, G Hall, J A Hendry, C Phillips, A Prothero, J K Reid, I M Smith, R Wait, J E Walsh, J M Watt, J R Whiteman, and J Williams. An introduction to some necessary theory of partial differential equations is given, and finite-difference and finite-element methods for elliptic and parabolic equations are discussed, including a description of numerical met hods for solving the resulting algebraic equations. Techniques for the solution of free and moving boundary problems are then described. Finally, there is a discussion of characteristic and finite-difference methods for hyperbolic equations and this is related to the problem of weli-posedness and boundary conditions, and the book closes with a description of methods for elliptic-hyperbolic equations.
