About the Author

John Warrack was University Lecturer in Music, and Fellow of St Hughes College, Oxford. He was Music Critic of the Sunday Telegraph, then director of the Leeds Music Festival. His books include Carl Maria von Weber, Tchaikovsky, and the Cambridge Opera Handbook on Die Meistersinger. He was awarded the degree of D.Litt by Oxford in 1989. Ewan West was Junior Research Fellow of Mansfield College, Oxford from 1988 to 1992. He has been Lecturer in Music at
Worcester College and Director of Studies in Music at Somerville College. He is now a civil servant.
