Synopsis
This handbook provides a snapshot of each country in the world. There is a map to show location and a brief overview of the geography, with the focus on the contemporary social, economic, and political issues that shape each country. There are data tables that show the main social and economic indicators for each country, such as GNP, life expectancy, and population growth and density. References to source books and recommendations for further reading, whether at international, national, or regional level, are also given.

About the Author
Peter Stalker is a freelance writer who has worked extensively for the United Nations. He has been editor of the Human Development Report since 1990, and has also written the World Labour Report for the ILO as well as editing UNICEF's State of the World's Children in 1996.
