About the Author

John Rowe Townsend has written novels for young readers that have received wide acclaim. Six of them were on the ALA Notable Book list of their years. The Islanders won a Christopher Award on its first publication, and The Intruder was an honors-list book for the Carnegie Medal and winner of the Boston Globe--Horn Book Award and an Edgar from the Mystery Writers of America. Mr. Townsend is a foremost authority on children's literature and is the author of two books on the subject, Written for Children and A Sounding of Storytellers. His books have been translated into twelve languages. He lives in Cambridge, England.
