9780144001033: Code Name God: The Spiritual Odyssey of a Man of Science

The compelling, beautiful narrative of Code Name God is one man’s rags-to-riches story and, more profoundly, the vision of a world-class physicist seeking to integrate the findings of science, religion, and spiritual quest.

Born in the impoverished Indian province of Bengal, Dr. Mani Bhaumik became a scientist and co-invented the laser technology that made LASIK surgery possible. Upon realizing that fame and fortune could not provide him with the abiding happiness that we all seek, Dr. Bhaumik began the search for a deeper understanding of spirituality.

Code Name God chronicles the amazing life of a man who is from both the East and the West and who finally discovers that “happiness is an inside job.”

This book’s prologue is read by Academy Award®-winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley.

From the Publisher:

Code Name God chronicles the amazing life of a man who is from both the east and the west, who finally discovers that "happiness is an inside job" and now invites us to join him on a cosmic dance across that vast expanse where God and the scientists, religion and faith, science and mysticism meet.

One day, Mani Bhaumik was sipping Chateau Lafite Rothschild with Hollywood celebrities enjoying the life of a self-made and successful entrepreneur. The next, he was on his knees before the enormous emptiness of that existence and searching for answers to questions he hadn't asked for a long time. The questions led straight to the root of some well-known mysteries. Einstein famously said that, "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." Code Name God attempts to elaborate on this profound truth. Dr. Bhaumik's journey through poverty, education, science, and success led to his effort to bridge the gap between modern physics, spirituality and cosmology.

From the Author:

As an impressionable teenager, I had the exceptional privilege of living in the camp of a remarkable individual. US Secretary of State George Marshal described him as the spokesman for the conscience of humanity. Albert Einstein pronounced that generations to come will scarcely believe such a man ever walked upon this earth in flesh and blood. His name was Mahatma Gandhi, considered as the father of independent India. I heard his words of wisdom from his own lips. His words were simple but spoken with the confidence of a man who proclaimed that his life was his message. One particularly became forever etched in my young mind. He said, "One must be the change one wishes to see in the world." What do we want to see in the world? We want to get rid of poverty and have material abundance. We want to get rid of suffering and have an abiding happiness, which seem to require a life rich in spirituality. I have tried to do that in my own humble way, as you will read in Code Name God.

As a skeptical scientist, I also had to find the scientific evidence to support that spirituality is essential for enduring happiness. I have presented the evidence, especially from the study of the biography of the universe and the nature of the quantum world, in terms understandable to non-scientists with the hope that it will change their lives as well.

Book Description Penguin Books India, 2006. Softcover. Book Condition: New. The split between man and maker has long been widening, and many acknowledge that the wedge is science Is God dead? Are religion and faith merely opiates of the masses? Is science responsible for driving a wedge between man and his maker? Till about four hundred years ago, belief in divine power dominated world thought. With developments in science and increasing philosophical scepticism, man appeared to lose faith in God. But science itself has proved to be a false god, leaving in its wake a disillusioned and despondent mankind. In Code Name God, Mani Bhaumik, one of the pioneers of LASIK, the technique that made corrective eye surgery possible, demonstrates how both spirituality and science are essential for human beings and how one can strike a perfect balance between the two. The author, who as a youngster lived in Mahatma Gandhi?s camp, details his incredible rags-to-riches journey and his equally remarkable search for meaning in life, which make for a motivational saga as he strives to achieve the golden mean between science and spirituality. Enriching and inspirational, Code Name God provides a simple and easy-to-understand scientific approach to faith and God-realization. ?The author?s personal odyssey ? in the attempt to find common ground between Eastern spirituality and Western science is eloquently told and makes for fascinating reading.??Fritjof Capra, author of the best-selling The Tao of Physics Printed Pages: 224.
