From the Inside Flap

From Chuck Hughes, Former Senior Dean of Admissions at Harvard University:

"The book you re holding in your hands Students Guide to Colleges is a fresh and exciting tool that will be invaluable as you attempt to select the school that s right for you.

From 1995 to 2000, I was a senior admissions officer at Harvard. Since then, I ve worked as an educational consultant, helping families plan for college. In both capacities, I ve read nearly ten thousand applications and worked with hundreds of parents and students who were hoping to find, and get into, the "best" college possible.

However, all too often parents and students have a distorted view of what the "best" college is. They listen to the marketing hype, they pay too much attention to rankings and prestige, and students commit themselves to spending four years at schools that aren t right for them. When making such an important decision as where to go to college, students need to figure out which schools fit. They need to discern the stories behind the rankings, to get answers to probing questions about a school s professors, its classes, its atmosphere and its social life, to find the place they ll enjoy living and learning the most.

Families aren t going to get answers to these questions from biased and blindingly glossy admissions pamphlets, where schools pretend to be all things to all people. They won t get answers from college guidebooks written by journalists and administrators who imagine, but don t know, what it s like on the ground. They will get answers by talking to current college students, the only ones who know the truth. And they will, I m convinced, get answers from Students Guide to Colleges.

Students Guide is a new kind of guidebook, created, written and edited entirely by current college students. Inside, 100 of the best colleges in America are reviewed. For every school, three students weigh in, each from a different academic and social area of campus, each with a different voice, a different perspective and different experiences. Together, these students offer detailed, nuanced, personal and honest portraits of their schools. They give you the stories behind the statistics. They also give you funny and irreverent reviews that are fun to read the next best thing to spending a week on campus.

Students Guide to Colleges was started by Jordan Goldman and Colleen Buyers when they were 18 year old college freshman. Goldman and Buyers, from their dorm rooms, created a website and an online survey covering every aspect of college life (including questions only true insiders would think to ask, like: What wouldn t a prospective student see on a campus tour? What goes on in the dorms at 3am on a Wednesday night, and how does that differ from school to school?)

In a few months, more than 30,000 students, all across America, logged on to their website. Students Guide quickly became a virtual grassroots movement, spurred on by the power of the internet, the power of student networks, and students desires to tell the truth about their schools, both the good and the bad. Friends told friends about Students Guide. News of the survey spread from school to school. Students weren t paid to give Students Guide in-depth reports freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors logged on because they wanted to get out the truth and let people know what their schools were really like. In the end, Students Guide to Colleges was completely student-created, written and edited no one involved was any older than 21.

Other college guidebooks offer statistics, sound-bites and out-of-context quotes. They pretend they can give a single, accurate account of what every school is like for every type of person. Students Guide tells you the truth, from three different perspectives, from the actual students. You then have the necessary information to figure out whether each school is right for you.

When students at the top 100 colleges graduate at the age of 22, they ll be courted by America s top companies for their ability to speak for themselves. But until now at the ages 18, 19, 20 and 21, these students have always been spoken for: by politicians, by advertisers, by college guidebooks written by journalists and administrators. In Students Guide to Colleges, the brightest young minds in America have come together and taken their voices back. They re telling you what it s really like at America s top 100 schools, so you can end up at the college that s right for you. They have extremely valuable things to say. I hope you ll listen."
