Synopsis
While researching Canada at War, published in 1997, Michael Benedict uncovered a treasure trove of compelling articles about the conflicts in which we have taken part. This second volume of war articles features more stories of drama, heroism, horror and triumph culled from the archives of Maclean's.
The sense of the heroic ordinary Canadian at war is exemplified by powerful first-hand accounts, including George Pearson's description of the last stand of the Princess Pats in the First World War, and by Robert Coffman's gripping account of how he and two of his downed crew survived on an island off the Greenland shore for ten days during the Second World War.
Heroes are recognized, too: in W.W. Murray's stirring tributes to winners of the Victoria Cross and Major George Drew's epic tale of farm boy William Barker, who became one of the deadliest and most heroic fighter pilots of all time. But there are also darker, more difficult stories from the pages of Maclean's: accounts of lost battles, death and destruction.
These splendidly written articles do more than bring the great conflicts of the 20th century alive to modern readers: They remind us of the debt we owe the men and women who fought for us, and the way their valour shaped and ennobled our nation.
