After leaving Oxford and studying at Kyoto University, Geoffrey Bownas set up the Dept. of Japanese Studies at Oxford University in 1954. He has written and broadcast on Japan since the early 1960s. He lives in London.
Anthony Thwaite taught English literature at Tokyo University. He was literary editor of the Listener and the New Statesman and was co-editor of Encounter. He was awarded an OBE for services to poetry in 1990. He lives in Norfolk.
