That poem concludes Nigel Glendinning's magnificent book, Goya and His Critics (Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 1977), which appeared a year after my own and which is not only a remarkably comprehensive and penetrating survey, but a scholarly, brilliant and immensely readable and enriching essay in its own right. From his book I learned that, all unknown to me, I fear, and thirteen years earlier, in that tradition of discourse which Francis Klingender initiated, Hubert Damisch had elaborated an argument similar to my own in his essay 'L'Art de Goya et les contradictions de l'esprit des Lumi?res' (Utopie et institutions au XVIIIe si?cle, ed.
