McCann paints a vivid picture of the tumultuous early days of the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland, as peaceful protest - driven off the streets - developed into armed insurrection. This new edition - which contains the full text of the original 1974 edition - includes an extended introduction, in which McCann argues (against both nationalist and loyalist orthodoxies) that the ideals that inspired the early movement continue to offer the only way out of the bloody mess of politics in Northern Ireland today.
