ENCLAVE

(French) 1 An outlying part of a nation state lying within the territory of another nation state, as seen from the point of view of the territory in which it lies.
EXCLAVE 2 A small cultural or linguistic group surrounded by another cultural or linguistic group which is dominant.

LITTLE ICE AGE

Neoglaciation. 1 The period c. 3000 to 500 BC, but varying with latitude, when the climate became cooler than in the preceding millennia, and glaciers reappeared in parts of Alaska and the Sierra Nevada. 2 The advance of glaciers in the Alps between AD 1550 and 1850.

SINK, SINKHOLE

1 In general, a hollow in which surface water collects and escapes through a shaft, i.e. a SWALLOW HOLE. 2 Specifically, a feature characteristic of limestone country (KARST), a closed depression which is dry or through which water seeps downwards, resembling in shape a basin, funnel or cylinder. 3 A large depression in a SHIELD VOLCANO or lava dome formed when the surface has cooled and solidified but subsides as the under-lying molten lava flows away.
